Artist Statement
Imagine the wind floating through your hopes and dreams, taking them along through the air, dispersing into the universe. Hear the sound of clinking coins, the coins that represent the funds that will fuel your future. Imagine on each coin, each piece of fuel, there is an experience to be had. Close your eyes and imagine walking on the world with your best friend, exploring all that life has to offer. Imagine an adventure filled with wonderful smells, bright tastes, and incredible color. Imagine sunset. Imagine traveling to a place where you are uncomfortable, doing things that are wilder than you have ever thought you would do. Imagine breaking out of your comfort zone, only to break it again.
Think about people. The people you would meet, the people you could help. What about feeding the hungry? What about placing a pencil in a child’s hand and watching them create? What about music? Could you imagine making instruments and musical knowledge available for everyone? Imagine all the doors that you have opportunity to open. You are the key that will unlock your future. If you want something, and define exactly what you want, you can have it. Open your eyes to the world around you ... send your hopes and dreams out into the universe .. make them known. To you.
Project Reflection
What did you learn about yourself in completing this project?
(below expectations, meets expectations, exceeds expectations)
Although I thought I had a relatively secure idea of what I want out of life, I learned a few new things. I have always been fascinated with money and I have always wanted to make a lot of money when I am older. I thought that I just wanted money to have money, and I guess I knew that it was so that I could feel secure. But by making my vision board, by putting all of my pictures on coins, I realized that it is not only financial security that I want, it is experiences. With enough money, you can have almost any experience you want. I could travel the world. I realized too, that music really is something that I have a passion for. I want to do something with it. I have always tucked it away as a hobby and thought maybe I could minor in music ... but I have never really considered it as a career. I still won’t solely pursue music, but by doing this project, and with including it in my vision board, I realized that it is indeed an important aspect of my life, and I should continue to make it a more heavy priority in my life. I also realized that I don’t really care about having a husband yet. I put a picture of a couple walking down the aisle of a church ... because eventually I know I will want to have a family. However, I believe that I would be content to live on my own for a few years to explore the world. That is something I REALLY learned about myself: I want to TRAVEL!
On a different note, I learned something about the way I work. I realized that when I have an idea or a task, I prefer to work on that only and get it done quickly and well. When I was making my vision board, I started one night at around 9 pm and finally went to bed at 12 pm. Usually I try to go to be around 10 pm or 10:30 pm! The next day, I worked to get it finished and I got most of it done in those two days. Along with the soft skill that I learned about here, I learned a few new technical skills through trial and error, and by simply doing new things! During this mini project, I had to drill holes into about 10 coins. I had never done this before, and although it is simple, I learned the tension of drill bits (I have broken a few in the past, but I was extra careful this time!). I also learned how to use a clamp to my advantage. I saw a problem with what I was doing, holding down the coin with one hand while trying to drill with the other, and I utilized the resources around me. Also, in bending the fork on one of the vision board strands, I subconsciously picked the thinnest fork, allowing for the most pliability.
What strengths did this project highlight for you? In what areas did this project push?
(below expectations, meets expectations, exceeds expectations)
This project highlighted both my resourcefulness skills as well as my creativity skills. By using the research time wisely, I ended up expanding my ideas for a vision board. I at first was thinking to make a mason jar snow globe, and was not open to much else. However, Pinterest opened my mind a bit and led me to later make the wind chime for my vision board! This project highlighted my resourcefulness skills when I had a vision of what I wanted and I asked for all of the help I needed. (ie. Asking dad for help in the garage.) My creativity skills were highlighted as well in this project because I took a concept I knew little about, beading, and I created an interesting final product. Also, I put a lot of thought into what was going into my vision board. (ie. The coins were for my aspiration to make a lot of money in my future, and on the coins, were the things I wanted. Money makes things happen.)
Although my strength in this project was the ability to use my resources and try new things, this was also where I was pushed. If I had done more crafting like this, using metal materials and such, I would have probably been able to make a better product, however, I am happy with the way it turned out. Another way I have been pushed, and this is an area in which I desperately am working on, is time management. This has been one of my problems since 8th grade, as you may remember me saying in some of my POL’s. I should have put more time into this reflection and gotten better evidence. I am finishing this up the morning it is due. No bueno. However, maybe I just work well under pressure. That will be my reason for slacking on things... :)
What level of personal effort do you feel you put into your project?
(below expectations, meets expectations, exceeds expectations)
I feel as though I put a lot of effort into this project. I stayed up late many times because I was so invested in the project. I also tried many new things as I listed above. I took the time to craft an artist-statement as well.
Also, I took time to really think about what I wanted my product to look like. I decided to use interesting materials that took time to put together and I wanted to make a final product, even with the limited amount of time we had. I was invested.
How effectively and thoughtfully did you integrate a 3d element into your vision board design?
(below expectations, meets expectations, exceeds expectations)
Although my other vision board ideas had 3D elements, or were in their own ways 3D, my vision board, in itself, was 3D. My vision board is a wind chime with elements such as keys, beads, and coins. The pictures I used, cut from magazines, are the only flat pieces. Those too though, were pasted on coins, another 3D item with meaning. This by far, was probably the most “3D” out of all the ideas I was thinking to pursue.
